Back in October
of 1992, keyboardist Debbie Shair was shocked to discover singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist
Todd Jaeger huddled in the corner of his parent’s garage in Los
Angeles; not so much shocked by the fact that he was still living at home,
or that he was in fact huddled, but more importantly due to the fact that
the incredible music he was creating was being kept from the rest of the
world.
Armed with a theremin, a guitar, a couple of keyboards and a somewhat
questionable dress code, the two started playing local clubs and inadvertently
caught the attention of legendary rock producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie,
T-Rex, Moody Blues), who offered to produce Marizane’s demos. As
if a giant match had been lit under their collective asses, the two quickly
moved to New York to work with the then-reclusive Visconti. During this
time, they participated in the CMJ (College Music Journal) music marathon
and were named “Jackpot of the Month” in CMJ Music Journal.
Upon returning to Los Angeles in 1996, the two met guitarist/part-time
drummer Jeff Kluesner and began recording a full-length CD entitled Hypercube
Sideshow until Debbie sustained an injury which sidelined her keyboard
playing for the next five years. As a result, Hypercube Sideshow
was never released. Now recovered, Marizane has bounced back with new
material and live performances that defy explanation. Most recently, Marizane
is featured on the soundtrack of the newly-released documentary featuring
the life of famed Los Angeles DJ Rodney Bingenheimer with their main title
track "Mayor of the Sunset Strip.”
Marizane’s new EP Stage One featuring the never-before-released
tracks produced by Tony Visconti as well as two new tracks was released
on August 12, 2003 on the Vibro-phonic
label and is available at CD stores in the US and UK or order online.
A new full-length CD of entirely brand-new material entitled Cosmosis
is slated to be released May 2004 on a label yet to be determined.
